Nicky Holloway Interview

Nicky Holloway Interview. Questions: Ro Flynn - October 2008.

Hey Nicky, how are you and what have you been up to?

Right now I'm half drunk and I have been up too no good as usual.

Tell us about Desert Island Disco...

Having made a living for the last 30 years as a DJ, travelled the world, owned night clubs, promoted parties and more recently moved into music production I thought it was about time I actually took a request for a change. It has been very interesting to see what it has thrown up. What started as a bit of fun on facebook is turning into something rather more.

What is your definition of the word Balearic?

Balearic is whatever you want it to be, all those records you like that don't fit in other categories, I suppose it was a cool early take on Guilty Pleasures.

Does Ibiza still excite you? How often do you visit? How do you think it has changed, has it changed?

I think it's become the Tesco's of clubbing, 60 euros to get into a club, 20 euros for a drink, fuck off it's a piss take out of every hard working normal person that goes there for a holiday. I think that the Island has bitten the clubbing hand that fed it. I have been going to Ibiza every year since 1983 however this year I think I fell out of love with it.

Tell us something unusual / entertaining about you?

I put the Z in Ibiza, but may take it back, not bad for someone with Dyslexia. And I can wiggle my ears, is that unusual?

You played Glastonbury this year. What was it like?

It was brilliant, really good. Myself and Trevor Fung were on at the same time as Amy Winehouse and thought the room would be empty as we were both sure everyone would want to go and see her before she dies, but to my surprise we rocked it and made it our own.

Acid House - 20 years strong - Will it be around for another 20 years?

Like Disco of course it will be around in 20 years, well, let's fucking hope so as I can't see myself getting by on a state pension.

Who are your favourite Dj's?

Chris Hill - He's 65 still does a once a month gig for a thousand people that have supported him for 35 years.

Gilles Peterson - Because he has been at the top of his game for 20 years and still has a passion for it like you can't believe.

What can we expect from your DJ set in Dublin?

Until I see the crowd and read the room I have no idea what I will play. It's a Desert Island Disco set so expect the unexpected!

What are your plans for the future?

To finish the book that I'm writing.

And finally, your top 5 Balearic Classics?

M1 - Feel The Drums

It was just a groove that really reminds me of the summer of '93.

Kenny Jammin' Jason - Can U Dance

An early house track that always reminds me of the early years.

Cyndi Lauper - True Colors

I'd hear this in the bars in the afternoon. It's a really personal track that reminds me of special moments out there.

Art Of Noise - Moments In Love

A superb chill out record.

Banderas - This Is Your Life

A great Balearic track that was played in the clubs for quiet a while
